Tampa Film Workshop Scams

Invest in yourself. Don’t let a Tampa film workshop rip you off.
You do not need Tampa film workshops. Tampa does not need film workshops. Tampa film workshops are not worth the investment in time or money, and they are only designed to take your money and to profit from your ignorance and lack of confidence. If you are ignorant and lack confidence, you won’t make it as a filmmaker regardless of what you invest in, and this is a main reason why graduates of Tampa film workshops will never really make it in filmmaking.
We have never seen a Tampa film workshop which works, or is worth it!
Most Tampa Film Workshop Scams are not actually scams, unless deception was used to market the film workshop, but rather poor investments. In such Tampa film workshops, the film workshops are set up to make money at the expense of the students, rather than actually help their filmmaking careers.
Most Tampa film workshops are low-rent aspiring film schools taught by filmmakers who would rather make money teaching others their mistakes than making money by making films.
Those who don’t do, teach. Would you rather learn from filmmakers who are out there making films, or from people who are motivated to make a living teaching film instead of making films? There is a reason that they are teach film, and that’s because they are not out there doing it as much as they should be to be a successful filmmaker who is worth learning from.
Some may say that filmmaking is expensive and the only way to obtain experience as a filmmaker is to pay for and attend film workshops. We strongly disagree, as those who say that are only out to sell you a service which does not deliver what you need.
If you are Tampa filmmaker, go out there and make films. Read up on what other filmmakers have done, read books on filmmaking, do films, and find your own voice. Don’t learn the way that others make films and pick up their bad habits, and don’t do films the way that everyone else does them. If you follow the crowd as a filmmaker, you will never make it. You need to find your own voice.
Sure, there are tried and true techniques which go into making films. Those, however, cna be learned by doing your own films and by reading up on filmmaking techniques, and you don’t need any film workshop or film school to learn these techniques. They are not difficult to comprehend, to learn, or to use.
Robert Rodriguez basically said in his filmmaking book “Rebel Without A Crew” to forget film school and to put that money into your own films. We agree, and we would like to add film workshops to his statement. If any filmmaker out there were to read his book and appendix 1: The Ten-Minute Film School, that filmmaker would laugh at the prospect of attending a Tampa film workshop. You don’t need any Tampa film workshops.
If you are an aspiring filmmaker and want to make films, go for it. Skip the Tampa film workshops and the film schools and invest in yourself. For less than $1,000.00, you can buy some basic filmmaking equipment and teach yourself to make films.
A good beginners camera would be a digicam, the DVD-quality Canon FS-100, which can be obtained for under $300.00. This camera is a solid state digital camcorder which “films” on a high capacity SD card. A laptop computer capable of editing the footage can be had for under $600.00, and once you obtain a tripod for under $100.00, you have a film production setup which you can practice with and learn how to make films. There are Tampa filmmakers working with such low-cost gear who can make better films than any of the so-called professional filmmakers using high-end gear who are teaching in these Tampa film workshops.
The secret? Start with a good script. If you can’t write or are not that creative, collaborate with a writer and team up with them. For short, low-budget films, work with strong scripts which call for small casts and minimal sets. Try to shoot outdoors on location if possible to keep costs down, and so you won’t have to invest a few hundred in a lighting rig (which you will need for interior scenes if you shoot them).
Another free filmmaking tip, and then we will proceed with our assessment of Tampa film workshop scams. Be your own Director, Director Of Photography (DP), and Editor. You can do all three on a small film, and the film will have stronger focus and execution. Concerning DP skills, this will take practice. Learn about framing shots, work from a tripod for steady shots, and learn about both the rule of 180 and the rule of thirds. The latter, the rule of thirds, is used in photography, but it will help you as a filmmaker and as a DP. Invest in filmmaking books, study them, and practice. This is how you become a filmmaker, and doing it this way will give you a much better chance of succeeding than if you were to waste time and money on Tampa film workshops.
Lately, certain Tampa film workshops have been sweetening the deal by adding screenwriting courses and acting classes to their workshops. Again, you can learn more, and better techniques, by reading books on the subjects.
Another issue with Tampa film workshop scams is when the organizers rope filmmakers into their scheme to lend it credibility. Since you are who you associate with, any of these so-called Tampa film professionals need to be scrutinized and investigated if they are involved with these Tampa film workshop schemes. Anyone involved with Tampa film workshops damages their professional credibility, if for nothing more than stupidity and poor judgement, and undermine their professional careers with questionable associations.
A recent Tampa film workshop scam combined with a Tampa film networking scam, using the misleading promise of a free Tampa film network to sell Tampa film workshops to people. Without actual free Tampa film networking, this is a scam, and should be avoided at all costs.

Tampa Bay Film site template and site directories refreshed on 10/07/09. Chris Woods power!

This Tampa indie film resource web site is dedicated to Tampa filmmaker Chris Woods, who is, in our opinion, the most talented and skilled Tampa filmmaker. His short indie film, Spaventare, filmed in Tampa Bay in early 2009, is a new benchmark for Tampa filmmaking; expect a lot of Tampa indie films in the future to follow the example set by this groundbreaking film. Not only is Spaventare, in our opinion, the best short Tampa indie film ever made, it proves that great films can be made on small budgets. Spaventare was done for less than $30.00, with a crew of three and a cast of two. Check it out on our online film festival by clicking on the link in this paragraph!
