Tampa Indie Film Casting Scams Indie film casting
scams are defined as bait and switch schemes where the victims, usually
actors or aspiring actors, are lured in with the promise of being considered
for a potential role in an independent film or a job. It is fraud. Once
at the audition or job interview, the casting director or the audition
board will find fault in the actor or job applicant, and they will not
get the role or the job. Often, the roles or jobs do not exist, and the
actor has no way of confirming the legitimate existence of the offer if
they never see it; the casting scam gets away with this because the actor
or prospect has no "need-to-know" specifics until they land
the job, which never happens. Since the actors or prospects are not smart
enough to exchange contact information when they meet each other at the
audition, and they usually keep to themselves and view the others simply
as cold rivals, there is no way to follow up afterwards and confirm if
anyone got the role or job. Even if the actors do not choose to exchange
information with the other actors, they should at least be professional
enough to follow up on the progress of any film production or which actors
are cast in the roles to determine the legitimacy of the casting director
and the production. If information is hard to come by or there is no indication
that the roles were cast with verifiable actors or the production fails
to materialize, then the actor should avoid any future auditions or castings
from that source in the future. If this is the case AND the actor was
pitched some service that they would have to pay for, the actor has a
professional responsibility to report
what happened to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) and the local
authorities as a potential bait and switch / deceptive trade practice
incident. If the actor knows of anyone else who was also a victim, they
should be encouraged to report what happened to them, also, as this will
give the authorities more evidence to work with and would strengthen any
potential criminal investigation. NEXT: Tampa Bay Indie Film Casting Scam Case Study INDIE

This Tampa indie film resource web site is dedicated to Tampa filmmaker Chris Woods, who is, in our opinion, the most talented and skilled Tampa filmmaker. His short indie film, Spaventare, filmed in Tampa Bay in early 2009, is a new benchmark for Tampa filmmaking; expect a lot of Tampa indie films in the future to follow the example set by this groundbreaking film. Not only is Spaventare, in our opinion, the best short Tampa indie film ever made, it proves that great films can be made on small budgets. Spaventare was done for less than $30.00, with a crew of three and a cast of two.
