Targeting Your Market

It is surprising how many indy filmmakers these days create films without planning on how they are going to market their film or who they are going to market it to. While creating a film for you is fine, and it is exactly what you should be doing, are you able to figure out who you will market your vision to and how you will go about it?
Sometimes, these issues might have to be addressed while the film is in the treatment phase, well before casting, rehearsals, and filming. If the film is especially controversial, or the filmmaker plans on using fan service, such as nudity, to sell the film, it is best to address the issue before the project gains any momentum.
Will the content of your film alienate the mainstream market because you are creating it for a niche? If you limit your market, will you also alienate investors? Some of those who do what their heart tells them to may be better of keeping the budget low if they want to push a certain market demographic. Either way, unique results can be obtained if you recognize the advantages and the disadvantages of your targeted market, and play up the strengths.
We must find a balance between what we want to do and what we do. These are things we all must consider as we make a living with the filmmaking profession.

Tampa Bay Film site template and site directories refreshed on 11/09/09. Chris Woods power!

This Tampa indie film resource web site is dedicated to Tampa filmmaker Chris Woods, who is, in our opinion, the most talented and skilled Tampa filmmaker. His short indie film, Spaventare, filmed in Tampa Bay in early 2009, is a new benchmark for Tampa filmmaking; expect a lot of Tampa indie films in the future to follow the example set by this groundbreaking film. Not only is Spaventare, in our opinion, the best short Tampa indie film ever made, it proves that great films can be made on small budgets. Spaventare was done for less than $30.00, with a crew of three and a cast of two. Check it out on our online film festival by clicking on the link in this paragraph!
